Hundreds of jobs set to be created through VIC Mickleham Road Upgrade
To help improve safety as well as travel times along Mickleham Road in Greenvale, the Australian and Victorian Governments have committed $219 million towards a much-needed upgrade.
About 25,000 vehicles run through Mickleham Road each day and this volume is expected to increase along with the rapid growth in the area. The upgrade will not only make the road safer, but it will also relieve congestion.
“This vital upgrade will reduce congestion and improve safety and travel time along Mickleham Road – ensuring people get home to their families sooner and more safely,” Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Catherine King said.
The first stage of works on Mickleham Road will include:
- Building extra lanes in each direction on Mickleham Road between Somerton Road and Dellamore Boulevard
- Adding new traffic lights at Aitken College intersection
- Replacing the roundabout at Somerton Road and Mickleham Road with a new traffic light intersection, including priority bus lanes
- Upgrading the Hillview Road and Dellamore Boulevard intersections
- Building new sections of walking and cycling path to improve connectivity along Mickleham Road
In addition, planning for a potential future upgrade of Mickleham Road between Dellamore Boulevard and Craigieburn Road will also be progressed.

The works will complement upgrades already underway in the North – including the Craigieburn Road Upgrade.
“Stage 1 of the Mickleham Road Upgrade is vital for our local community where rapid growth in population and urban development has meant many arterial roads are at capacity,” Victorian Member for Yuroke Ros Spence said.
“The upgrade will build extra lanes in each direction on Mickleham Road between Somerton Road and Dellamore Boulevard, and upgrade four key intersections, to provide a connected, reliable transport network for locals,” Federal Member for Calwell Maria Vamvakinou said.
Planning and development works on Stage 1 of the Mickleham Road Upgrade will now get underway to get a better understanding of the area. Technical investigations will be conducted to help inform future planning decisions as well as assist in the initial design phase to ensure the project has minimal impact where possible.
Stage 1 of the Mickleham Road Upgrade is anticipated to create up to 420 new jobs, including 134 direct and 286 indirect jobs, providing a boost to the local economy.
“The Mickleham Road Upgrade builds on our significant investment in the north – not only improving safety and travel time but also providing a boost to the economy with hundreds of new jobs,” Victorian Minister for Roads and Road Safety Ben Carroll said.
