Golding Contractors to deliver $40m bridges replacement project in QLD

Construction has commenced on a $40 million project – funded through the Queensland Government State Infrastructure Plan – to replace five timber bridges on the Dawson Highway between Calliope and Biloela, with Gladstone-based Golding Contractors heading the delivery of the project.

According to Minister for Main Roads and Road Safety Mark Bailey, the old timber bridges’ weight limits had been a major hindrance to the region’s freight movement, with some vehicles opting to travel an additional hundred-kilometres via Rockhampton.

“The project will replace the long-standing timber bridges which will widen the Dawson Highway at these locations, increasing safety for all road users.

“The new concrete structures are part of the continuing improvement of the Dawson Highway to open up new transport opportunities for the region,” Mr Bailey said.

The five timber bridges up for replacement are:

  • Nine Mile Creek, located 19 kilometres west of Calliope
  • Catfish Creek, located 22 kilometres west of Calliope
  • Sheep Station Creek, located 23 kilometres west of Calliope
  • Maxwelton Creek, located 38 kilometres west of Calliope
  • Doubtful Creek, located 44 kilometres west of Calliope

Assistant Minister for Transport and Infrastructure and Member for Gladstone Glenn Butcher said he was thrilled to announce that Golding Contractors has been awarded the construction contract for this bridges replacement project.

“This is a great local company who support local jobs, with this project supporting 38 direct jobs during construction over the next 12 months, which is great news for the Gladstone community,” Mr Butcher said.

Mr Butcher added that the upgrade project will help open transport links from the region’s agricultural sector in the west to the Port of Gladstone.
