Georgiou secures $51m contract for works on Scarborough redevelopment

Georgiou Group has been awarded a $51 million contract to deliver works for Scarborough’s beachfront transformation in Western Australia.

“Georgiou Group have extensive experience in delivering big civil works projects, particularly in high traffic areas, and will continue the foreshore redevelopment of the new public realm at Scarborough Beach,” said Planning Minister Donna Faragher.

This project will include the construction of a new surf club facility as well as improved promenades and beach access. Development will also include a children’s playground, a skate park and other recreation facilities which will surround the new Sunset Hill.

“A number of accessible elements will also be incorporated into the playground and Scarborough will join the expanding Changing Places network, providing more opportunities for people with disability to visit and enjoy the beach,” Ms Faragher said.

Deputy Premier Liza Harvey has unveiled the design for the children’s playground and it has been designed around a whale skeleton which reflects the Whadjuk/Noongar stories that say spirits return to land through whales.

“Scarborough has transformed so much in recent years and visitors are flocking to the foreshore but these public facilities we are announcing today will really be the jewel in the crown.

“Early next year, Scarborough will once again play host to the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships, bringing thousands of interstate and regional visitors to the area and providing a great opportunity to showcase the refreshed beachfront,” Ms Harvey said.

This $100 million project – where $48 million has been committed by the State Government and $53.4 million by the City of Sterling – will help Scarborough fulfil its potential as one of the country’s best beaches. This redevelopment project will also foster future investments as well as development in the area.

Major works are expected to commence in the coming weeks, with up to 100 jobs to be supported throughout the construction phase.
