Final stage of The Northern Road Upgrade in NSW now underway

The first sod has been turned and construction is now underway on the final stage of The Northern Road Upgrade in New South Wales. Stage 6 works will be carried out between Eaton Road and Littlefields Road in Luddenham.

This upgrade will improve access as well as safety and travel times for road freight travelling across Sydney’s west and southwest.

“The Australian Government has committed $1.2 billion towards The Northern Road Upgrade and we are getting on with the job of delivering new and improved transport for the residents and motorists of Western Sydney,” Federal Minister for Population, Cities and Urban Infrastructure Alan Tudge said.

In April of this year, CPB Contractors was awarded the contract to deliver the sixth and final stage of The Northern Upgrade. The contractor will be upgrade 3.6 kilometres of the road from a two-lane to a four-lane divided road as well as upgrade approximately 2.5 kilometres of local arterial roads and deliver adjustments to public utilities. Other works will include installation of new traffic lights and construction of a shared path for cyclists and pedestrians.

This stage of the project is part of a broader program of works that will deliver upgrades to a 16-kilometre stretch of The Northern Upgrade between Mersey Road in Bringelly and Glenmore Parkway in Glenmore Park, which is divided into three stages:

  • Mersey Road to Eaton Road
  • Littlefield Road to Glenmore Parkway
  • Eaton Road to Littlefields Road

“Once complete, the entire 35-kilometre upgrade of The Northern Road between Narellan and South Penrith will provide a high-quality connection with the M7 and M12 motorways and support Western Sydney’s growing population,” NSW Minister for Transport and Roads Andrew Constance said.

Once construction on Stage 6 is completed, motorists will be able to experience improved travel times to and from the new Western Sydney International Airport (Nancy-Bird Walton Airport) at Badgerys Creek.

“More than 15,000 vehicles use these sections of The Northern Road each day and this number is expected to significantly increase once the new airport opens in 2026, so it is important to get on with the job now,” Federal Member for Lindsay Melissa McIntosh said.

The entire The Northern Road Upgrade - anticipated to be completed in 2022 - is part of the Australian and NSW Governments’ $3.6 billion Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan that is set to improve safety, reduce travel times and bust congestion.

“This road upgrade is all about making it easier and safer for motorists to get where they need to go. Everything we are doing is about easing congestion so people spend less time in their car and more time with their family and friends doing the things they love,” Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor said.
