The final designs for the removal of four dangerous and congested level crossings in Melbourne’s west as well as the new Melton Station have been released and construction is on track to begin later this year.
The release of final designs follows the awarding of two construction contracts for the projects.
A new rail bridge is going to be built on Coburns and Exford roads to ensure roads users will no longer be stuck at the level crossings while new road bridges with dedicated shared user paths will be constructed along Ferris Road in Melton and Hopkins Road in Truganina.
“We’re getting rid of these four dangerous and congested level crossings to make Melton boom gate free – which will cut congestion in Melbourne’s booming west,” Minister for Transport Infrastructure Danny Pearson said.
Meanwhile, the new Melton Station will be delivered with four platforms to cater for one of the fastest growing communities in Australia. This will pave the way for more services and improved capacity on the Melton Line.
The new station can be accessed from both sides of the rail line and each of the platforms will be accessible from lifts and stairs. Other features of the elevated station include pick up and drop off zones, a new air-conditioned waiting room and staffed ticket office. Lighting and security cameras will also be installed throughout the station precinct as well.
Over 850 submissions from locals helped shape the final designs for the removal of the level crossings and the new station. Through the submissions, the community expressed their desires for improved passenger facilities and safety at the new Melton Station as well as the planting of a wide range of native and indigenous plants, trees and grasses.
The new Melton Station will open and the four level crossings will be gone for good in 2026, two years ahead of schedule.
“These final designs show how fantastic the new Melton Station will look when it opens in 2026 and removing these level crossings will improve the daily commute for the 73,000 drivers that use these roads each day,” Member for Melton Steve McGhie said.
“These level crossing removals will transform the area, boosting safety and easing congestion. The final designs take us one step closer to construction starting later this year,” Member for Kororoit Luba Grigorovitch said.
The Victorian Government is also progressing planning on the $650 million Melton Line Upgrade, which will be delivered in a separate package of works. This project will ultimately allow nine-car VLocity trains to travel on the line while reducing crowding and increasing passenger capacity by 50 per cent.
These works are being delivered as part of the Level Crossing Removal Project which aims to remove 110 dangerous and congested level crossings by 2030.
