Perth’s road network continues to transform at a rapid pace, with expressions of interest called for the design and construction of a widened Karel Avenue bridge across Roe Highway.
According to Paul Fletcher, Federal Minister for Urban Infrastructure, the project will form a key pillar in the $2.3 billion WA Infrastructure Package, which is predicted to support 6,000 jobs.
“This upgrade is one of many vital projects being funded under the Turnbull Government’s commitment to deliver almost $7 billion worth of infrastructure projects in Western Australia and is yet another example of how the Turnbull Government is backing Western Australia and boosting the state economy,” Mr Fletcher said.
Rita Saffioti, Western Australian Minister for Transport, said the Karel Avenue Upgrade was one of seven congestion-reducing road projects to be built in Perth’s south over the next three years.
“Together we are delivering 22 kilometres of additional freeway capacity, addressing congestion at known bottlenecks such as Cockburn Central and improving access to employment hubs and medical facilities. This will result in a safer, more efficient, and predictable journey for all road users,” Ms Saffioti said.
The project is set to reduce congestion at the Karel Avenue/Roe Highway interchange and improve access to Roe Highway and Kwinana Freeway for residents of Leeming and Bull Creek, according to Ben Morton, Federal Member for Tangney.
“The interchange is the primary access to the Jandakot Industrial Area, which when developed is expected to support more than 8,000 jobs and 300 businesses. In addition to this project, the Murdoch Drive Connection will also reduce traffic and congestion through Leeming and Bull Creek,” Mr Morton said.
Main Roads will investigate widening Karel Avenue between Farrington Road and Berrigan Road to a four-lane dual carriageway as part of the upgrade and lengthening the existing Karel Avenue bridge across the freight rail line immediately to the south of Roe Highway which will facilitate construction of the Thornlie-to-Cockburn rail line.
$12million has been provided by the Australian Government, with the Western Australian Government contributing the remaining $3 million for the $15 million project.
