Genex Power Limited has appointed the McConnell DowellDowner EDI joint venture as the preferred engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for the 250MW Kidston Pumped Storage Hydro Project.

The Kidston Pumped Storage Hydro – also known as K2-Hydro – is part of the overall Kidston Hydro-Solar Project Stage 2 (K2) which also includes a 270MW polar PV development known as K2-Solar. The entire development is located in North Queensland.

Genex will now work with the McConnell Dowell – Downer joint venture as part of the project’s early contractor involvement (ECI) process in order to complete the final design optimisation as well as the full EPC and operation and maintenance (O&M) contracting process for K2-Hydro.

The process will include a competitive tender process to secure the electro-mechanical equipment package for the project, which will be released in November 2017. Invitations for this tender process are extended to a number of Tier 1 hydro turbine suppliers.

“The McConnell Dowell / Downer JV is a very strong partner to deliver the Kidston Pumped Storage Hydro Project. As a combined force, the JV has a complementary skill set and a long track record of delivering hydro projects around the world, a strong balance sheet and proven project delivery capabilities – factors which are likely to materially contribute to the bankability and successful implementation of the project,” Genex Managing Director Michael Addison said.
