Emu Swamp Dam in QLD takes one step closer to construction

The Queensland Government joins in on the delivery of the Emu Swamp Dam in the Granite Belt with a $13.6 million investment to get work underway on the new dam.

The Australian Government has committed $47 million towards the project, while local Stanthorpe irrigators chipped in to deliver $23.4 million to fund the construction of the Emu Swamp Dam.

“We will work collaboratively with the State Government to make sure we get this project moving as quickly as we can.

“It’s so important to the local economy and to the region’s growers who are carting water to be able to survive,” Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said.

The Emu Swamp Dam is going to be the first dam to be built in the State since 2011.

The project will deliver a new dam together with a 117-kilometre pipeline and a distribution network that features solar power generation as well as a large-scale battery storage to get the pumps going.

The Emu Swamp Dam will have a capacity of approximately 12,074 megalitres and will be able to provide up to 3,900 megalitres of entitlements to local irrigators each year.

“This project will give Granite Belt producers the water security they need.

“I’m committed to working with all levels of Government and local growers to make sure the Dam is built,” Minister for Water Resources David Littleproud said.

The Emu Swamp Dam is anticipated to generate up to 135 jobs during its construction.
