Early works have begun on the new Roma Hospital in Queensland

Work has begun on the $70 million new Roma Hospital, beginning with two early works packages. Early works include the full program of pathology refurbishment and relocation, with works expected to be completed by mid-December 2016.

According to Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, the delivery of the refurbishment component for the project was awarded to local contractor Brett Cherry Builders Pty Ltd.

“The local contract will refurbish a section of the existing Roma Hospital to house the relocated Pathology Department.

“Once this relocation is completed, the existing separate Pathology Building, the old nurses’ quarters and the hospital swimming pool will be demolished to clear the area for the start of construction of the new $70 million hospital,” Premier Palaszczuk said.

Demolition works are expected to begin once the pathology relocation has been done by mid-December. Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Cameron Dick said that the successful tenderer for the demolitions package will be announced by the end of November.

Mr Dick also said that Jacobs Engineering Group has been appointed as the Principal Design Consultant for the Roma Hospital project.

“As Principal Design Consultant, Jacobs will now start undertaking the detailed architectural design of the new hospital.

“They will be responsible for the day to day management of the design and documentation process, including coordinating the work of sub-consultants such as project engineers,” said Mr Dick.

The Roma Hospital project is part of the Queensland Government’s Enhancing Regional Hospitals program, and the new hospital is being built in order to meet the needs of the region and its people as well as deliver the latest advancements in healthcare and technology.

According to South West Hospital and Health Board Chair Lindsay Godfrey, the new Roma Hospital will give the Maranoa community as well as the region a huge boost.

“As a government, we are committed to making Queenslanders among the healthiest people in the world by 2026 and this means improving access to quality and safe healthcare for all Queenslanders, wherever they live, including in regional areas like the South West,” Mr Dick said.
