The dangerous and congested Brunt Road level crossing in Pakenham, Victoria is on track to be gone for good in 2025 as works get underway on its removal.
Site amenities such as offices and rail safety fencing have already been established.
The Brunt Road level crossing is going to be removed by replacing it with a new road bridge over the Pakenham Line. This will improve safety as well as ease congestion for the thousands of motorists passing through this route each day.
With the boom gates down for up to 24 minutes during the morning peak along with two near misses and one collision since 2012, elevating the road over the rail line will not only alleviate congestion, but it will also remove the risk of fatal incidents between road users and trains.
This project will also deliver a new shared user path that will connect to existing pedestrian links within the area, providing improved accessibility and connections to schools, shops and services on either side of the rail line.
In the coming months, an updated design for the removal of the Brunt Road level crossing is going to be released and it will reflect feedback on the early designs provided by the community.
“With these early works underway to remove the level crossing, locals can look forward to safe, boom gate-free journeys when the new road bridge opens by 2025,” a statement from Level Crossing Removal Project.
The Brunt Road level crossing is just one of the 22 to be removed along the Pakenham Line to help improve safety as well as reduce congestion for the growing south-east.
Last year, an alliance between Fulton Hogan, Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) and the Level Crossing Removal Project was awarded a $66 million contract to remove the Brunt Road level crossing.
