Early works commence on $944m Brisbane Metro project

The $944 million project that will build the Brisbane Metro is moving forward with early works already underway to investigate and get more information for further planning. Early works will include surface feature survey, geotechnical investigations as well as identification of underground services locations.

“On Adelaide Street, at night you will see work happening to dig trenches to test drill to determine exactly the conditions of the soil underneath the road, what underground services are in place.

“We obviously have detailed plans and maps of the underground services on Adelaide Street, but invariably the testing is required because there are things under there that aren’t on the official plans and we need to identify those early,” Brisbane City Council Public Transport Chairman Adrian Schrinner said.

Over the coming months, investigation works will continue along the project corridor, locations including the Cultural Centre precinct in South Brisbane, the Brisbane CBD, Buranda, Mount Gravatt and Rochedale.

In July of this year, more than 200 local and international industry leaders were invited to attend a special industry briefing session where the companies get to hear about construction and employment opportunities on the project.

Expressions of Interest (EOIs) were expected to open for submission following the industry briefing session.

The Brisbane Metro project will be delivering two new high-capacity metro lines. The two new metro lines will be using the existing South East Busway and parts of the Northern Busway. The two lines are:

• Metro 1 - Eight Mile Plains station to Roma Street station
• Metro 2 - Royal Brisbane Women’s Hospital station to University of Queensland Lakes station

The almost one billion dollar project will include:

• New and modified infrastructure
• High-frequency turn-up-and-go metro services
• A new fleet of high-capacity metro vehicles
• Policy and operational improvements
• New customer and vehicle management systems
• 18 stations and 11 interchanges spread out across a 21-kilometre dedicated route
• A fleet of 60 high-capacity metro vehicles

Once Brisbane Metro is up and operational, it will be slash travel times as well as reduce inner city bus congestion and improve the region’s transport services to inner suburbs.

Major construction activities on the project is expected to commence in 2019, with services on the new Brisbane Metro set to begin in 2023.
