As planning and design progresses for the $342 million Nowra Bridge project in New South Wales, early works have also commenced on the new Shoalhaven River crossing.
“More than 50,000 vehicles across the Shoalhaven River every day, so this new bridge will both address current congestion issues and also cater for future traffic growth,” Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said.
According to NSW Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole, this project will help connect communities as well as improve safety on the road.
“Significant upgrades at key intersections will alleviate congestion and ensure safer and more reliable journeys for all motorists using this key South Coast tourist and freight corridor,” Mr Toole said.
The Nowra Bridge project will include:
“I spend a lot of time driving around New South Wales and it’s fantastic to see so much construction under way right across the state. While frustrating at times, roadworks are actually a good thing because it means our road network is becoming safer,” Senator for New South Wales Jim Molan AO DSC said.
Early works on the project include utility and geotechnical investigations. Major construction on the project is anticipated to commence in the second half of this year, with completion due by mid or late 2024.
“Locals will already see crews drill holes in the road for the testing of soil, rock and pavement samples,” Member for Kiama Gareth Ward said.
Once the new Nowra Bridge is completed, it will help improve traffic flow and ease congestion on the Princes Highway, delivering more reliable and safer journeys within the Nowra-Bomaderry area.
“This project is an important part of infrastructure needed to support growing areas like Nowra,” Member for South Coast Shelley Hancock said.
In February, Fulton Hogan was awarded the contract to build the Nowra Bridge. You can read more about the contract award here.
