Early works have commenced on the $176 million Linkfield Road Overpass upgrade at Bald Hills in Brisbane’s outer north.

Once completed, the upgrade will help reduce congestion, improve safety and freight access, and drive opportunities for active transport use.

“With the start of underground utility relocations, we are seeing the next steps towards construction of this significant piece of infrastructure.

“We are delivering transport solutions for Northside residents that reduce congestion and provide better connections for their communities,” QLD Minister for Transport and Main Roads Bart Mellish said.

Based on previous community feedback, key features of the upgrade include:

  • Upgrade of Linkfield Road to 4 lanes (2 lanes in each direction) between Gympie Road and Lacey Road intersections, and removal of existing Linkfield Road overpass to create a new overpass
  • Increase in the overpass clearance height from 4.7 metres to 6 metres
  • Upgrade of northbound and southbound entry ramps, ad extension of southbound exit ramp length
  • Signalisation of northbound and southbound ramp intersections
  • New separated pathway for eastbound pedestrians, riders and other users
  • New on-road cycle lane for westbound bike riders

“It’s great to see the early works beginning on the Linkfield Road Overpass upgrade, which will see a safer and more convenient link delivered for motorists in this part of Brisbane’s growing northern suburbs.

“We understand that as Queensland continues to grow, our infrastructure needs to keep up with this demand. This upgrade of the Linkfield Road overpass forms part of our government’s $20 billion pipeline of infrastructure projects across Queensland,” Assistant Minister for Regional Development and Senator for Queensland Anthony Chisholm said.

“The Linkfield Road Overpass is an important congestion-busting project for our community that I’ve fought hard to secure.

“I know residents will be excited to see diggers on site as the first significant step in upgrading the Linkfield Road Overpass to four lanes.

“The Pine Rivers community wants transport solutions that matter for reducing congestion and that’s exactly what the Miles Government is delivering,” Member for Pine Rovers Nikki Boyd said.

Project planning with service providers and the Department of Transport and Main Roads started after the announcement of accelerated initial funding to enable works to begin on site.

The Linkfield Road Overpass upgrade is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments, each contributing $125.5 million and $50.5 million respectively.

“The Albanese and Miles Governments have jointly committed $176 million to deliver the Linkfield Road Overpass upgrade for road users in north Brisbane.

“This is part of our Government’s investment for more than $10 billion in safety and capacity improvements for the Bruce Highway.

“I look forward to major works beginning onsite and to delivering this upgrade, which will reduce congestion and improve safety and freight access,” Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King said.
