Transport for NSW has recently awarded Downer Group with contracts to deliver works for two train station upgrade projects under the NSW Government’s Transport Access Program.

Panania Station

Downer is expected to commence works on Panania Station’s accessibility upgrade in June 2017 and it will take about 12 months to complete.

Improvements on the station will include:

  • Three new lifts and stairs
  • A new bridge for pedestrians
  • New canopies for weather protection
  • Refurbishing the heritage platform building to include new toilet facilities
  • Improving the bicycle facilities as well as the areas for interchanges
  • New wayfinding signage
  • Improve the lighting and CCTV surveillance system
  • New accessible parking spaces with new zones for taxis and a “kiss and ride” zone for private vehicles

“This upgrade will make it significantly easier for our less mobile customers, including those with a disability, parents with prams and travellers with luggage to access public transport services,” a Transport for NSW spokesperson said.

Victoria Street Station

Downer is responsible for the delivery of Victoria Street Station’s upgrade, with improvement works to be done to the commuter car park and transport interchange.

Works will include:

  • Installation of three new lifts with a direct access to the footbridge from the street and down to the platforms
  • Refurbishment of the existing station building as well as footbridge and stairs
  • Resurfacing of the platform
  • Installation of new CCTV cameras and lighting to improve security
  • Construction of new canopies over the platform, footbridge and stairs, providing protection from the weather
  • A new accessible toilet
  • Resurfacing of the existing commuter car park
  • Construction of two new car parking spaces with a space for taxis and private vehicles to drop-off and pick-up customers
  • Construction of accessible paths which will connect the car park to the rest of the transport interchange

Subject to planning approval, upgrade works on Victoria Street Station is expected to begin by mid-2017.

"Planning is underway for an upgrade of Victoria Street Station which will make it significantly easier for our less mobile customers to access public transport, including people with disabilities, parents with prams and travelers with luggage," a Transport for NSW spokesperson said.
