In late December 2024, Bright Energy Investment’s Board of Directors approved the Stage 2 expansion of the Warradarge Wind Farm in Western Australia.

Subsequently, Vestas was awarded the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract for the supply and installation of 30 additional wind turbines.

The new turbines will feature a hub height of 84 metres, a tip height of 152 metres and blades 67 metres long – the same size as Stage 1 turbines.

The Warradarge Wind Farm has been operational since 2020 and has been supplying 180MW of green energy to the South West Interconnected System (SWIS), with the expansion of the wind farm to further add 103MW – enough capacity to meet annual electricity needs of 164,000 Western Australian households.

“Warradarge Wind Farm started operating in 2020 and is considered a world-class large-scale renewable energy project.

“The Mid West offers abundant wind resources and the expansion will allow for even more sustainable energy to be harnessed for use in the South West Interconnected System.

“We are thrilled to again partner with Vestas to deliver Warradarge Wind Farm Stage 2,” Bright Energy Investment General Manager Tom Frood said.

“The completion of Warradarge Two Wind Farm will continue to accelerate the country’s clen energy ambitions.

“We are pleased that we combine our industry-leading people, technology and sustainable energy solutions,” Vestas Australia and New Zealand Senior Vice President Country Head Danny Nielsen said.

Bright Energy Investment is a joint venture between Government-owned Synergy, Cbus Super and CVC DIF.

The Warradarge Wind Farm is located about 260 kilometres north of Perth, in the Shires of Coorow and Carnamah in the Mid West Region of Western Australia.

The Western Australian Government has committed $30 million towards the $400 million Warradarge Wind Farm expansion project. This significant funding forms part of the $5.7 billion invested in the State’s clean energy future since 2017.

Project construction is due to begin in the second quarter of this year, with the new wind turbines commissioned in late 2026 and the expansion to be operational by 2027.

Once the expansion is up and running, the overall wind farm will feature 81 turbines that have the capacity to provide 283MW.

“The Cook Labor Government’s vision for WA’s energy future is clear.

“We want households and businesses to access clean, reliable, and affordable energy, which can be provided by a mix of rooftop solar and onshore wind, backed by large-scale battery storage, and firmed by gas as required.

“With this expansion of Warradarge Wind Farm, Western Australians can rest assured knowing the future of our State’s energy system is secure,” Energy Minster Reece Whitby said.
