The dangerous and congested level crossing at Victoria's Mount Derrimut Road is expected to be permanently gone by 2024 – a year ahead of schedule – as works are fast tracked to begin by the end of this year.

This level crossing removal project will include building a two-kilometre rail bridge over Mount Derrimut Road as well as a new Deer Park train station, with the rail bridge anticipated to improve connections to schools, parks and healthcare for the local community.

“Right now, the Mount Derrimut Road level crossing dominated the way people commute, shop and even send their kids to school. It is absolutely time for it to go,” Member for Kororoit Marlene Kairouz said.

In addition, the new train station at Deer Park will provide better links to the newly constructed residential areas of Derrimut. The upcoming Deer Park Station will feature a new pedestrian connection that will link the suburbs to the north and south of the station; more car parking; and bike facilities that encourages commuters to park and catch a train into Melbourne.

The 150 new and upgraded car parking spaces at Deer Park Station will be delivered as part of the State Government's Car Parks for Commuters program to cater for the growing population in the western suburbs.

The removal of the nearby level crossings at Fitzgerald and Robinsons roads are already underway and along with the Mount Derrimut Road level crossing removal, the three projects will pave the way for future improvements to the region's rail infrastructure under the Victorian Government's Western Rail Plan.

“By 2024, Deer Park and Ardeer will be completely level crossing-free – reducing congestion and delivering better community connections for our growing western suburbs.

“More trains than ever are now running on this part of the rail network – so it's essential we get these crossings gone for good as soon as possible,” Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan said.

The concept designs for the Mount Derrimut Road project have been released and beginning 19th April, locals are encouraged to provide their feedback on the designs that include options for open space and landscaping around Deer Park Station.
