Decmil has been chosen by Rio Tinto subsidiary RTA Weipa to deliver works at the Mine Infrastructure Area at the Amrun project, 40kms south of Weipa in Far North Queensland. In a company statement, Decmil announced that "the contract scope includes design, fabrication, supply, delivery, construction, installation, testing and comissioning" of the mine area.
"The design phase of the contract will commence in January 2017 with works on site expected to commence in August 2017."
Rio Tinto's Amrun Project is a greenfield bauxite operation in the Weipa / Aurukun region of Western Cape York, Far North Queensland.
Construction includes of a range of infrastructure required to support mining including a processing plant and port near Boyd Bay, a dam, tailings storage facility, roads and a ferry terminal on the Hey River to transport workers from Weipa to the mine.
The new development will eventually replace the existing East Weipa mine centre and develop the high quality bauxite reserves available south of the Weipa Peninsula.
