The Department of Defence has chosen CIMIC Group company CPB Contractors to undertake the Army Aviation Program of Works at the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Base in Townsville, Queensland.

This program of works is estimated to be valued at $370 million and it will include upgrading or rebuilding infrastructure and facilities that support the relocation of both the 1st Aviation Regiment from Robertson Barracks and the 16th Aviation Brigade from Gallipoli Barracks to RAAF Base Townsville. The works are in line with the objectives of the Defence Strategic Review.

“This important program of works supports the Australian Defence Force’s ability to operate from Australia’s northern bases. CPB Contractors has extensive experience in working with the Department of Defence to enhance and sustain base environments and operational capability. We are pleased to play a role in creating an Army aviation centre of excellence in Townsville,” CIMIC Group Executive Chairman Juan Santamaria said.

“CPB Contractors’ expertise and experience will ensure the package of works is delivered in line with all operational and security requirements. We are focused on delivering expanded, fit for purpose facilities to support and serve the Australian Army’s increasing numbers and spatial needs. Our local knowledge and experience will also ensure this project maximises social and economic opportunities for local community, industry and Indigenous participation,” CPB Contractors Managing Director Jason Spears said.

CPB Constructions will commence the design process in early 2024 and construction is expected to begin in mid-2025, subject to government approvals. Project delivery is expected to take up to three years to complete.
