CPB and Bombardier win $1bn contract for works on VIC's Metro Tunnel Project

CPB Contractors, together with Bombardier Transportation, has been awarded the $1 billion Rail Systems Alliance (RSA) contract for the multi-billion dollar Metro Tunnel Project in Victoria.

Scope of works will involve installing 55 kilometres of next-generation, high-capacity signalling (HCS), which includes the first roll-out of a high-capacity signalling and communications system on an existing rail network anywhere in the country.

“This is the next major piece of the puzzle – high-tech signalling to run bigger trains, more often through the Metro Tunnel,” Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan said.

The HCS will allow trains to safely run closer together which means that they can run more often. This advanced technology will create a true ‘turn-up-and-go’ train network for Melbourne.

The signalling will also operate the 65 new high-capacity trains that are currently being built in-State. The new trains will be running on the Sunbury to Cranbourne-Pakenham line via the Metro Tunnel.

Dedicated control centres that will support this new technology will be built in Dandenong and Sunshine, and will be manned by experts who will be monitoring the trains on the new Metro Tunnel line.

“High Capacity Signalling means more trains, less waiting and services so often you don’t need a timetable – you just turn up and go.

“It’s cutting edge technology that will get people home safer and sooner, every day,” Premier Daniel Andrews said.

Expressions of Interest for the final major works package of the Metro Tunnel – the Rail Infrastructure Alliance (RIA) – is expected to open for submissions this week.

The $1 billion RIA contract is for the design and construction of the eastern tunnel entrance in South Yarra as well as the western tunnel entrance in Kensington. Associated works across the Sunbury to Cranbourne-Pakenham corridor, with track power and conventional signalling upgrades, are also included.
