The redevelopment of the Tom Price and Paraburdoo hospitals in Western Australia are a step closer to commencing as the State Government engages with Cooper & Oxley to undertake the project.

Under the Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) process, Cooper & Oxley will participate in the design phase for the main works of the two healthcare facilities while also progressing forward works on the Tom Price Hospital site.

“Securing a contractor is a major step towards delivering these critical projects for the Pilbara.

“The upgrades to Tom Price and Paraburdoo hospitals will bring these facilities into the future, so they can continue providing a great service to the community for decades to come.

“My Government is getting on with the job of delivering upgraded health infrastructure in regional WA and I’m excited to see these transformative projects begin to take shape over the coming months,” Premier Roger Cook said.

The purpose-built facility at Tom Price will include:

  • Modern emergency department
  • Contemporary ambulatory care facilities to support the full complement of visiting services, including outpatient specialists and community mental health
  • Private interview and consult rooms
  • Four bed inpatient ward
  • Dental services
  • Pathology services

Meanwhile, the redevelopment of the Paraburdoo Hospital, which will take place at the existing hospital site, includes:

  • New, contemporary emergency department
  • Integrated primary and community care services
  • Space for an on-site private GP clinic

“The engagement of Cooper & Oxley through the Early Contractor Involvement process for the redevelopment of Tom Price and Paraburdoo hospitals is an important milestone for the local community.

“The Cook Government’s innovative approach to contractor engagement has fast-tracked the redevelopments, allowing works to commence on site at Tom Price while the designs of both projects progress simultaneously,” Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson said.

Geotechnical engineering and ground surveying works will begin at the Tom Price project site soon, followed by a forward works program.

The Western Australian Government is partnering with Rio Tinto to deliver the hospital upgrades. The company has invested a total of $40 million, which includes a $20 million commitment from its $250 million Resources Community Investment Initiative.

“Two significant redevelopments will deliver modern, fit-for-purpose hospitals for our community.

“The contractor will be involved in design phase for the main works of both projects while also progressing forward works on the Tom Price site, in a major step forward for these important projects.

“Our partnership with Rio Tinto is a great example of Government and industry working together for the benefit of communities,” Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel said.
