Contract to upgrade Jervis Bay Road intersection awarded to SRG Global

The next stage of works on the Princes Highway upgrade in New South Wales’ South Coast will soon commence following the award of the major construction contract for the $164 million Jervis Bay Road intersection upgrade. 

SRG Global Civil has secured a $90 million contract from Transport for NSW to upgrade the Princes Highway and Jervis Bay Road intersection at Falls Creek, just south of Nowra. Contract execution will begin immediately.

This award is an outcome of our proven ability to target any major road and bridge projects in Australia, through now having the highest national road and bridge accreditation (R5/B4). 

“The Jervis Bay Road and Princes Highway Intersection Upgrade contract reaffirms SRG Global’s market leading position for the delivery of complex road and bridge projects, we look forwarf to working with TfNSW to deliver a safer Princes Highway with projects that include new and improved roads and bridges as part of the Australian and NSW Government’s significant investment in transport infrastructure to meet the needs of regional communities,” SRG Global Managing Director David Macgeorge said. 

The Jervis Bay Road and Princes Highway intersection upgrade will include: 

• Widening the road to a four-lane divided highway, with two lanes in each direction of the Princes Highway 
• Building an overpass bridge over Jervis Bay Road 
• Building two roundabouts at the existing road level to enable safer access and improve traffic flow 
• Building an access road to service properties located to the south-east of the intersection 

Longer entry and exit lanes as well as free-flow traffic access north and south will also be delivered. In addition, bus bays, a kiss-and-ride facility, bicycle racks, bus shelters and shared path connections will be constructed as part of a multi-modal facility that forms part of the upgraded intersection. 

“This intersection upgrade will be a game-changer for motorists and communities on the South Coast. 

“The upgraded intersection includes an overpass bridge for highway traffic to safely cross Jervis Bay Road and it will also allow road users on Jervis Bay Road to turn north on the Princes Highway without being held up by highway traffic,” NSW Regional Transport and Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison said. 

Early enabling works on the project was completed in June 2023 and in the coming weeks, early construction activities to deliver a new grade-separated intersection that will serve as the main link to the coastal villages of Huskisson, Vincentia, Hyams Beach and Jervis Bay will commence. 

“Enabling early works were completed earlier this year, and now, with the contract for major construction work awarded, this allows us to forge ahead with this much-needed safety upgrade for an intersection. 

“The intersection has the highest volume of vehicle movements on the Princes Highway between Nowra and the border with Victoria and has been the location of 15 crashes in the past 5 years, resulting in 6 serious and 11 minor injuries. 

“The work we’re funding will help save lives and reduce crashes,” Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King said. 

Major construction on the intersection is estimated to take about four years, with project completion expected in late 2027, subject to weather and construction conditions. 

The Jervis Bay Road and Princes Highway intersection upgrade is jointly funded by the Australian and New South Wales Governments. 

“It’s great to see community feedback has been incorporated into the final design, with western entry and exit lanes and a roundabout connecting the Old Princes Highway a direct result of that feedback. 

“The design has also been enhanced to include improved connectivity options for wildlife,” Federal Member for Gilmore Fiona Phillips said. 

“Along with members of my community, I am very pleased to see work ramping up on this important infrastructure project. 

“The awarding of the major construction contract demonstrates the Albanese and Minns Labor governments are getting on with the job of delivering important infrastructure that will set up the South Coast for the future,” State Member for South Coast Liza Butler said.
