Contract awarded for $16.4m new Port Adelaide railway project

The contract to design and build a new rail spur and station at Port Adelaide has been awarded, which will return rail services to the precinct.

The Public Transport Projects Alliance has been awarded the contract to deliver this $16.4 million project – who was also appointed to deliver the $174.3 million Oaklands Rail project.

“Delivering this spur line will provide a fast and efficient new way to travel between the Adelaide CBD and the heart of the Port, catering to thousands of extra residents, workers and tourists coming to live, work and explore the district.

“They will be able to catch regular train services from a brand new, modern, safe and accessible Port Dock station when this new line is finished,” Transport and Infrastructure Minister Stephen Mullighan said.

Once the Port Dock Railway Line project is completed, it will return train services to Port Adelaide after approximately 30 years. The project will also improve public transport connections to this growing precinct.

This project will include the construction of a new one-kilometre spur line that will link Port Adelaide’s commercial centre and the Dock One residential precinct to the CBD. The line – which spurs from the existing Outer Harbour line at Grand Junction Road – is going to be rebuilt and a new station at Baker Street will also be constructed.

“The State Labor Government’s investment is transforming Port Adelaide into a thriving tourist, commercial and residential precinct which respects and celebrates the maritime history of our beautiful district.

“Bringing trains back to the Port will play a huge role in encouraging more and more people to come here to visit or to live or work, and that will drive economic growth and encourage more investment in our area,” Member for Port Adelaide Susan Close said.

The Port Dock Railway Line project is expected to support up to 48 jobs during construction. Trains are set to commence servicing the Port in the second quarter of 2019.

Train services will not be affected during the early works for this project.
