Construction has commenced on the safety upgrade to the Horsham roundabout, one of busiest intersections along the Western Highway in regional Victoria. This upgrade is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said that this project will help improve safety as well as traffic flow at the busy intersection, delivering major benefits for freight operators, motorists and local producers.

“Upgrading this intersection will improve safety and reduce congestion along one of Victoria’s busiest freight and travel routes,” Mr McCormack said.

Works on the intersection will include:

  • Prioritising traffic on the Western Highway by separating Melbourne-bound and Adelaide-bound lanes from the rest of the intersection
  • Installing mountable kerbs and concrete pavement to make it safer for trucks and buses to navigate the roundabout
  • Removing the right-hand turn into O’Callaghans Parade from the Western Highway to promote a smoother flow of traffic and reduce risk of T-bone crashes
  • Improving signage to make it easier for vehicles to navigate the roundabout
  • Installing safer surfaces, crossing points and improves signage for pedestrians and cyclists

“We’re making the O’Callaghans intersection safer, more accessible and improving traffic flow for more than 26,000 vehicles that use it every day,” Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan said.

This upgrade is bound to deliver a number of changes that will help keep traffic moving and reduce driver errors.

“Adelaide-bound drivers will no longer need to cross lanes within the roundabout to exit and the right-hand turn from the Western Highway into O’Callaghans Parade will also be removed,” Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister Andrew Broad said.

The upgrade to the Horsham roundabout is part of the $20 million Western Highway - Stawell to South Australia Border Upgrade project that is jointly funded by the Victorian and Australian Governments on a 50:50 basis.
