Construction begins on WA's Shenton Park Hospital site redevelopment

Construction has begun on the redevelopment on one of Perth’s most historic sites, the Shenton Park Hospital. The site will be transformed into Montario Quarter, a mixed-use estate.

“With construction underway, Montario Quarter is set to become a vibrant community development which respects the site’s former life as a place of healing and wellbeing,” said Lands Minister Rita Saffioti.

Montario Quarter will have approximately 1,500 new apartments and townhouses as well as a village shopping precinct with more than 5,000-SQM of floor space.

The development is set to become a prime example of the Western Australian Government’s vision to revitalise underutilised properties around key public transport infrastructures into high-quality urban precincts.

“For infill to be a success it must be as diverse as possible and targeted around key public transport infrastructure – this project fulfils both these requirements,” Ms Saffioti said.

Expressions of Interest (EOIs) will be opened in the coming weeks for the development of the two first lots on the former Shenton Park Hospital site.

Victoria House – a historic building on the property – will be the centrepiece of the new estate. Once it is re-purposed according to heritage requirements, the building will be suitable for various re-use opportunities which includes retail, office, commercial or community use.

“The preservation of significant elements of the hospital site, such as the Victoria House and the retained mature trees, will ensure its heritage and community significance is reflected and incorporated in the estate,” Ms Saffioti said.

LandCorp will be managing the process for EOIs of the two mixed-use zoned R160 lots.

The project is expected to create up to 300 construction jobs annually during the 10-year development phase. Approximately 50 jobs will also be generated for the project’s civil works.
