Early works construction has begun on Victoria’s largest public transport project – the fully funded $10.9 billion Metro Tunnel project. The early works contract is valued approximately $324 million, and was awarded to John Holland in June this year.
“The Metro Tunnel is fully funded, fully planned, and work has begun.
“This is Australia’s most important public transport project, freeing up space on our busiest lines and allowing us to run more trains, more often, all over Melbourne,” Acting Premier Jacinta Allan said.
Works included in John Holland’s $324 million contract are:
Excavation works on the 35-metre deep shafts at Franklin and A'Beckett Streets will begin early in 2017 and it will involve digging of 34 Olympic-sized swimming pools worth of dirt and rock from the city’s underground. The two shafts will be covered by large acoustic sheds to help reduce the noise for neighbouring residents and offices.
A Request for Proposal has also been released to the three shortlisted builders for the next stage of the project – the $6 billion Metro Tunnel and Stations PPP.
