Construction begins on central section of $1.12bn NorthLink WA project

Construction has commenced on the central section – between Morley and Ellenbrook – of the $1.12 billion NorthLink WA project.

The central section of the project will involve the construction of a free-flowing link from Reid Highway to Ellenbrook, which will improve access to Ellenbrook as well as the surrounding suburbs.

Works on the central section will include:

  • Construction of an interchange at the Reid Highway and Tonkin Highway intersection
  • Upgrading Reid Highway – between Altone Road and Malaga Drive – to a dual carriageway
  • Building flyovers at Marshall Road and Beechboro Road
  • Modification works to Altone Road and Reid Highway signalised intersection
  • Construction of interchanges at Hepburn Avenue, Gnangara Road and at Ellenbrook
  • Construction of new cycling and pedestrian facilities, including a four-metre wide shared path to Ellenbrook

One of the key benefits of the NorthLink WA project is that it will be removing four of the State’s most dangerous intersections, which two are located in the central section – Tonkin Highway / Reid Highway and Beechboro Road / Gnangara Road.

According to Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester, the NorthLink WA project is expected to create up to 1,000 jobs during construction and will be providing a new transport link from the Perth Airport area to Muchea.

“This project will be a vital part of Perth’s freight network, with 80 per cent of heavy vehicles to be redirected from Great Northern Highway onto the new route.

“Road safety will also be improved by using a combination of median strips, and around 150 kilometres of road safety barriers to separate vehicles from ongoing traffic, as well as eliminating two of the State’s most dangerous intersections,” Mr Chester said.

Construction of the NorthLink WA central section will be headed by the Great Northern Connect (GNC) team, a joint venture between Laing O’Rourke Australia Construction and BGC Contracting.

All sections of the NorthLink WA project are expected to be completed by mid-2019.
