The Victorian Government is gearing up to remove the dangerous and congested level crossing at Glenroy Road in Glenroy, with the announcement of the project design as planning progresses.
“This dangerous and congested level crossing holds up thousands at Glenroy Road each day - it’s got to go.
“This will make a real difference for people in Glenroy, making it quicker, easier and safer to get around,” Acting Premier Lisa Neville said.
To remove the level crossing, a rail trench is going to be built under Glenroy Road. The project will also include the construction of a new Glenroy Station.
The rail trench design has been found as the most feasible option for the removal of the level crossing. It avoids significant compulsory property acquisition and it also is the most suitable for the complex topography of the area.
The Glenroy Road level crossing is going to be the second one to be removed on the Craigieburn Line.
“We’re getting on with removing the second level crossing on the Craigieburn Line, making it safer and faster for people to get where they need to be,” Acting Minister for Transport Infrastructure Melissa Horne said.
Removing this level crossing will help improve safety and travel times for the thousands of commuters using the Glenroy Station daily as well as for those who frequent shops, cafes and community groups in the area.
Further technical studies are currently being conducted by the Level Crossing Removal Project team, with community consultation continuing this year to give locals the opportunity to have their say on the project.
The Glenroy Road level crossing is going to be permanently gone by 2022.
“Since we announced that this crossing would be removed we have worked closely with the Minister on the design options. I am delighted with this outcome and excited that we have reached this next stage in the project,” Member for Pascoe Vale Lizzie Blandthorn said.
