Builder announced for $354.3m Regency Road to Pym Street upgrade SA

A new major milestone that will take South Australia’s $354.3 million North-South Corridor from Regency Road to Pym Street even closer to beginning construction has been reached, with the announcement of a preferred builder.

The consortium comprising of McConnell Dowell Constructors Pty Ltd, Mott MacDonald Australia Pty Ltd and Arup Group Pty Ltd has been awarded the contract to design and build the project.

Scope of works under this contract will include the delivery of a 1.8-kilometre motorway along South Road that will connect the South Road Superway and the Torrens to Torrens Project.

Main construction activities are expected to commence in late 2019 and the project is due to be completed in 2022.

Over the construction phase, the project is anticipated to support an average of up to 210 full-time jobs annually.

The Regency Road to Pym Street upgrade is the final missing link on the North-South Corridor between Gawler and the River Torrens.

“When complete, will deliver efficient and reliable travel for up to 53,000 vehicles per day on this section of South Road, by removing the need to travel through two signalised intersections,” Minister for Cities, Urban infrastructure and Population Alan Tudge said.

This section of the North-South Corridor is part of the $11.9 billion infrastructure pipeline that was included in the South Australian 2019-20 State Budget.

“We are building congestion busting infrastructure that will cut travel times, make our roads safer and also secure construction jobs into the future,” Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Local Government Stephan Knoll said.

Works on the Regency Road to Pym Street upgrade will include:

• A 1.8-kilometre section of non-stop roadway, providing three lanes in each direction (at-grade)
• Two lanes in each direction on the South Road surface road, providing access to the surrounding community and local businesses
• An overpass over Regency Road (three lanes in each direction). Two lanes in each direction (at-grade) on the surface roads underneath
• Left in and left out only access at Pym Street
• Full access to and from the non-stop motorway at Regency Road
• Intersection upgrade at Regency Road
• Improved cycling and pedestrian facilities
• A grade separated pedestrian and cycle overpass over South Road in the vicinity of Pym Street
• Landscaping and noise barriers

This upgrade is jointly funded by the State and Australian Governments as part of the overall investment to build the North-South Corridor, a non-stop 78-kilometre motorway between Gawler and Old Noarlunga.
