A “Big Dig” is happening in June at Glen Huntly as the Victorian Government pushes through with the removal of two dangerous and congested level crossings as well as the construction of a brand-new train station.

Crews are now working around the clock to prepare the project site for major construction. More than 2,250 piles are already in place, making up the walls for the 1-kilometre rail trench that will run under Neerim and Glen Huntly roads.

“We’re getting rid of two dangerous and congested level crossings in Glen Huntly a year ahead of schedule – it’ll save lives, ease congestion and get Victorians home sooner,” Premier Daniel Andrews said.

The construction blitz starting on 2nd June will see over 500 workers on site 24/7, excavating up to 65 Olympic swimming pools worth of dirt and pouring more than 30,000 cubic metres of concrete. During this time new tracks and signalling will also be installed and the new Glen Huntly Station is going to be built.

Road closures in the area will be observed in preparation for excavation works on the trench, including on Glen Huntly Road from 5 May until mid-July and at Neerim Road from 29 May until late June. In addition, buses will replace trains on the Frankston Line between Caulfield to Moorabbin while crews carry out the works.

The level crossing on Glen Huntly Road has the last remaining tram squares on the metro network and removing this will significantly reduce congestion while making tram and train journeys more reliable and safer not only for passengers and drivers but for pedestrians and cyclists as well.

“We’re powering ahead with our construction blitz, revitalising the Glen Huntly Station precinct, creating more open space, improving transport connections and making the community safer as we make the Frankston Line level crossing-free by 2029,” Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Jacinta Allan said.

Glen Huntly Road will be boom gate-free from mid-July this year and a new central tram stop will take the place of the dangerous tram square.

The Frankston Line is set to be level crossing-free by 2029, having all 27 congested and dangerous level crossings permanently removed along with 17 new train stations built.
