Avalon Airport to receive International Terminal

Victoria’s Avalon Airport is set to receive an International Terminal which will boost jobs and the state’s export markets.

The build is set to generate more than 200 new jobs, including 33 positions throughout the construction phase.

With Avalon Airport located geographically between Melbourne and Geelong, it makes the airport both a capital city terminal and an exceptionally well-equipped regional airport that services a large catchment in western Victoria, providing connections for significant tourism destinations such as the Great Ocean Road.

$1.5 million has been invested by the state government, with the building including a new industrial precinct that helped secure Jetstar’s future with the airport and creating an additional 750 new jobs which includes Cotton On Group’s purpose-built distribution centre.

A new agreement to operate from Avalon Airport has been committed to by Jetstare and will see passenger services expand over the next 10 years. The agreement will see Jetstar increase the number of flights from five to seven per day and fly to two new domestic destinations over the next 18 months.

Ben Carroll, Minister for Industry and Employment along with Lara John Eren, Minister for Tourism and Member, announced AirAsia will fly twice daily between Avalon and Kuala Lumpur with flights set to commence by the end of 2018.

“We will always put local jobs first. That means working with Avalon Airport to create new jobs and open up new opportunities for ex-auto workers,” Carroll said.

According to Victoria’s Minister for Regional Development Jaala Pulford, this is a game changer for regional Victoria.

“This is a big day for Avalon and a game changer for regional Victoria. We’re proud to support this project that will bring more international visitors to our state and see more quality produce exported to the world stage.” said Pulford.
