Acciona appointed to build $700m thermal Waste to Energy plant in WA

Acciona has been appointed to build an innovative thermal Waste to Energy (WtE) plant in the Kwinana Industrial Area of Western Australia - approximately 40 kilometres south of Perth. This $700 million project is being developed by a joint venture between Macquarie Capital and Phoenix Energy.

Under this contract, Acciona will undertake engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) as well as operations and maintenance (O&M) services with its partner Veolia.

Work on the facility is set to commence this month, with a 36-month construction period. More than 800 jobs are expected to be created during the delivery phase of the WtE plant and about 60 permanent operations and maintenance jobs once the facility is up and running.

“This is a landmark project for WA and our country as a whole. Waste to Energy is an underexploited technology in Australia, and it’s great to see Phoenix Energy, with the support of Macquarie Capital, developing the first large-scale plant here. We will bring the best of our local and global knowledge to the construction, and are working with some great partners who also have highly specialised skills,” Acciona Geotech’s Managing Director Bede Noonan said.

Once the new facility is operational, it will be able to process up to 400,000 tonnes of waste a year, utilising best practice technologies and processes. The thermal WtE plant is estimated to export 36MW of electricity to the grid, which is enough to power approximately 50,000 homes.
