New South Wales is one step closer to having its largest solar farm development, with the State Government giving the go-ahead in December 2018 to the construction of the 900MW Yarrabee Solar Farm.
The project - expected to be valued at almost $1 billion - is going to be located approximately 23 kilometres south west of Narrandera in the Riverina region on a 2,600 hectare site. The Yarrabee Solar Farm is set to comprise of up to 3 million solar PV panels that are going to be mounted on 36,000 single-axis tracking systems.
The project will also include the construction of a new high-voltage substation adjacent the existing 330kV Wagga to Darlington Point transmission line.
This new large-scale solar project is also expected to generate local jobs for the region.
“This project will support over 450 construction jobs over the construction period of around four and a half years, providing a significant economic boost to the local economy.
“The project will significantly increase our energy capacity while contributing to a cleaner energy future for our state - a win win,” NSW Energy minister Don Harwin said.
Project developer Reach Solar Energy is anticipating to begin construction of the Yarrabee Solar Farm early this year.
Once operational, the large-scale solar farm is expected to generate enough renewable energy to meet the electricity demands of up to 315,000 homes.

Works are expected to commence early next year on a large-scale solar farm and battery storage in South Australia’s Mid North, with the project granted the necessary approvals for development. The South Australian Government and the Ngadjuri Nation Aboriginal Corporation have also expressed their support for this renewable energy project.
The New South Wales Department of Planning and Environment has given the development approval to RES for the delivery of a new 200MW solar farm located approximately 20 kilometres south of Narrandera.
A new solar farm is anticipated to be built in West Wyalong after the New South Wales Government gives planning approval to Lightsource BP for its proposed $135 million renewable energy project.
