$470m vanadium mine project in QLD to create hundreds of local jobs

A $470 million vanadium mine is one step closer to beginning development in North West Queensland as Multicom Resources’ proposed Saint Elmo Vanadium Project receives a prescribed project status.

The proposed mine development is going to be located about 25 kilometres east of Julia Creek and it is anticipated to create up to 200 jobs during its construction as well as up to 150 operational jobs, with locals living in the McKinlay Local Government Area to be given priority for work.

“The proponent will mine and process vanadium for use in the growth market of vanadium batteries and new technologies within the renewable energy sector, and in high-strength steel production.

“Initially, 10,000 tonnes per annum will be mined at the site, which is in the North West Minerals Provence, with the workforce expected to be largely sourced locally and housed in the region,” Minister for State Development Camreon Dick said.

Over time, the mine is expected to be expanded to produce approximately 20,000 tonnes per annum, which will support up to 150 additional jobs during its construction and 100 jobs once operational.

The prescribed project status will help streamline necessary approvals as well as fast track the project’s delivery. This will also allow the Coordinator-General to intervene in the approvals process, when necessary, to ensure timely decision making for the mine development.

“We are very grateful for the continued support provided by the Queensland Government to the Saint Elmo Vanadium Project.

“Gaining the required permits and approvals in a timely and efficient manner is a critical aspect of our development plans,” Multicom Resources Limited CEO Shaun McCarthy said.

According to Minister Cameron Dick, the Saint Elmo Vanadium Project is consistent with the State Government’s North West Queensland Economic Diversification Strategy which is set to provide investment as well as contribute to the development of strong supply chains and creation of sustainable communities in the region.

“The Saint Elmo project will contribute to long-term sustainable growth in North West Queensland.

“In addition to the mine, the project includes a processing plant, rail spur line into the mine site, workforce accommodation village and associated infrastructure including an off-site water supply dam and 20km pipeline to the project site,” Mr Dick said.

Construction of the mine is anticipated to commence in late 2020 and the first production of vanadium pentoxide targeted in late 2021.
