$35m WA Kwinana Freeway on-ramp project begins construction

Construction is now underway on a new southbound freeway on-ramp from Manning Road in Como, Western Australia which will help bust congestion at eh Canning Bridge and Kwinana Freeway interchange.

“It forms part of a transformative road improvement program, with seven congestion-busting road projects now underway on Perth’s southern suburbs.

“Safety enhancements including local intersection improvements, traffic efficiency and reduced travel times mean the local and wider community will benefit from this vital new freeway connection,” Federal Minister for Population, Cities and Urban Infrastructure Alan Tudge said.

This $35 million includes:

• Construction of a southbound on-ramp
• Construction of a southbound freeway lane from the Canning Highway on-ramp to the Edgewater Road footbridge
• Construction of a merge lane from the on-ramp to the freeway heading south
• Close access to Manning Road from Lockhart Street
• A left-turn only access at Edgecumbe Street onto Manning Road
• Installation of cabling for future signals at Manning Road and Clydesdale Street intersection (including right-turn pocket from Manning Road to Clydesdale Street)

In addition, a noise wall will be built adjacent to Edgewater Road in Salter Point between the street and the freeway.

“We expect this project to reduce pressure on other parts of the road network and to complement the many upgrades underway on the Kwinana Freeway and its connecting roads.

“While there are some roadworks in the short-term, southern suburb commuters will notice a huge difference to their travel times upon completion and we thank them for their patience,” Minister for Transport Rita Saffioti said.

According to Federal Member for Swan Steve Irons, the on-ramp project is one of the highest priority projects for the Kwinana Freeway in Como.

“Education facilities including Curtin University and South Metropolitan TAFE, along with commercial precincts in the areas of Cannington, Cockburn and Jandakot will also benefit from the additional access being built for the Kwinana Freeway, between Canning Highway and Leach Highway,” Mr Irons said.

Once construction is completed, the new on-ramp will be able to accommodate around 7,000 vehicles daily which will reduce traffic on the Canning Highway as well as improve travel times by five minutes during peak travel times.

This project is going to be delivered by BMD Construction.

The Australian and Western Australian Governments are jointly funding this project, with each contributing $28 million and $7 million respectively.

The new on-ramp is anticipated to open to traffic in mid-2020.
