In December, a consortium comprising of John Holland and Mirvac was awarded the contract - valued at $299 million - to deliver Sydney Metro’s new Waterloo Station and integrated station development.

“This project will transform Waterloo and improve community spaces in the inner city for generations to come. Our integrated team has worked together across development, investment and complex transport infrastructure to create an urban renewal project that will make commuting easier, create jobs, and improve community facilities. I could not be more proud, John Holland CEO Joe Barr said.

“Our vision for this precinct extends beyond the bricks and mortar; we will be a long-term investor in Waterloo and we are wholly committed to realising the potential of this site to help drive meaningful social renewal and enduring value for the broader precinct,” Mirvac CEO & Managing Director Susan Lloyd-Hurwitz said.

The new Waterloo Station will include:

  • New pedestrian crossings on Raglan and Cope streets
  • New taxi bays on Raglan Street
  • New bike parking within the precinct
  • New kiss and ride bays on Cope Street
  • Existing bus stops retained northbound on Botany Road closer to Raglan Street
  • Relocation of the bus stop on Cope Street to Wellington Street
  • Enhancement of pedestrian infrastructure around Metro Quarter including footpath widenings and through-site links

Once completed, the new integrated station will provide commuters with more public transport options as well as improve connectivity in and across the city.

The entire concept of the Waterloo Metro Quarter will comprise of five buildings - three towers and two mid-rise buildings - above and adjacent the new station.

As part of Sydney Metro’s value capture agreement, the John Holland-Mirvac joint venture will provide $106 million to the New South Wales Government for the air rights for the integrated station development.

In addition, the joint venture will also provide approximately $20 million worth of works to Aboriginal-owned businesses, which will help double the State Government’s Aboriginal workforce participation target to five per cent.

The Waterloo Station and integrated station development is expected to support more than 2,000 jobs and it is due to be completed about the same time as the opening of the Sydney Metro & Southwest in 2024.
