Works are now underway on a 244MW wind farm developed by CWP Renewables - in partnership with investment firm, Partners Group - located approximately 30 kilometres north of Yass in New South Wales’ Southern Highlands region.
The Bango Wind Farm is set to become the State’s third largest wind farm and it is expected to generate over 740,000MWh of renewable energy each year. In addition, this wind farm will be supplying up to 100MW of its capacity to Snowy Hydro after the project secured an off-take agreement of 15 years.
The new large-scale wind farm will comprise of 46 wind turbines with a maximum height of 200 metres each. GE will be supplying the GE Cypress 5.3MW turbines and TransGrid will be delivering the substation.
“Projects like Bango and the others in the portfolio will help with the transition away from fossil fuelled electricity in the State.
“This is the future of large-scale generation in Australia. We can, from this large diversified portfolio, produce low cost, low emissions, reliable power,” CWP Renewables CEO Jason Willoughby said.
The Bango Wind Farm is anticipated to begin operations my mid-2021, with an operational life of about 25 years. The development will create up to 10 full time jobs once operational together with numerous supply and service opportunities throughout the life of the project.
Downer has also been awarded a contract valued at $80 million for Balance of Plant works which will include the delivery of road upgrades, internal access tracks, cabling, turbine foundations and other site facilities.
"We look forward to working with CWP, Partners Group and GE to deliver the Bango Wind Farm and contribute to the local region," Downer's Executive General Manager for Renewables and Power Systems Lena Parker said.
This project is part of Grassroots Renewable Energy, which is a large-scale renewable energy platform that was established by partners CWP Renewables and Partners Group. The platform also delivered the 270MW Sapphire Wind Farm and the 135MW Crudine Ridge Wind Farm - both also located in New South Wales.
“With a potential project pipeline of 1.3GW of wind and solar generation capacity, we are pleased to continue to work with the CWP team to develop Grassroots into a renewables platform of significant scale, offering attractive offtake solutions across a diverse portfolio, and supporting the generation of clean energy in Australia,” Partners Group Operating Partner and Chair of Grassroots Renewable Energy Benjamin Haan said.
