$143m Googong town centre expansion in Canberra ready for construction

Canberra’s Googong town centre expansion – a $143 million greenfields development – is set to begin construction this year.

The project – also known as “Googong Central” – was developed by Peet Limited and Mirvac, and it will feature 1,800 new houses together with the core business and retail hub of the neighbourhood. The new town centre is going to be located 16 kilometres south-east of Parliament House within the 780-hectare Googong site.

“This is the biggest development application since the 800-hectare Googong site was first approved in 2011 and it’s an important milestone for the community.

“Googong Central will bring new facilities and services to town so residents don’t have to leave to access good shopping, great schools, and choice in healthcare and recreation,” Googong Project Director Malcolm Leslie said.

Once completed, the development’s retail centre is expected to contribute approximately $185 million annually to the local retail industry. This project is also expected to support hundreds of jobs for the ACT region.

“Employment is an important part of that. The town centre will create more opportunities for people to work close to home, particularly young people and working parents.

“The choices in housing will be bigger too, to meet growing demand in the wider Canberra market. The town centre will cater for different lifestyles, with apartments, compact lots and terraces, as well as traditional lots for families who want space and a big backyard,” Mr Leslie said.

Mr Leslie added that construction is set to commence in May 2018 and major supermarkets are expected to open in 2024-25.
