BMD awarded $100.4m Bruce Highway - Boundary Road interchange upgrade

The contract for the construction of the new Boundary Road interchange on the Bruce Highway at Narangba has been awarded to BMD Constructions. As said by Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester, BMD Constructions was chosen among four shortlisted companies after a competitive tender process. Expression of interest was announced back in September 2015 and was closed on October that same year. This $100.4 million project is jointly funded by the Australian Government – who funded $80.3 million – and the Queensland Government who contributed $20.1 million.

“We are a step closer to commencing this important infrastructure project, which will improve capacity and safety for motorists and pedestrians in this rapidly growing area just north of Brisbane on the Bruce Highway.” – Minister Darren Chester

According to Queensland Minister for Main Roads and Road Safety Mark Bailey, it was great to see a Queensland-based company being awarded the contract for the new interchange. He also mentioned that the Boundary Road interchange will increase capacity and make it easier for drivers to have access to Bruce Highway as well as the retail and residential precincts in the Norht Lake and Narangba areas.

Upgrade works will include the installation of two signalised intersections at the new exit and entry ramps. It will also improve bridge clearance in order to avoid detouring on other roads.

The $100.4 million project will involve the construction of a new six-lane bridge over Brice Highway as well as four through lanes for the Boundary Road traffic as said by Federal Member for Dickson Peter Dutton.

“The bridge will feature a dedicated pedestrian and cycle pathway, and left-slip lanes to provide free flowing access to the highway on-ramps.” – Federal Member Peter Dutton

According to Federal Member for Petrie, Luke Howarth, the extended on and off-ramps will help improve safety for drivers entering and exiting the highway. He said that the ramps will improve the ability of the interchange to efficiently handle increased traffic flows.

The construction phase of the project will bring jobs as well as further the growth of the region, according to Federal Member for Longman Wyatt Roy.

Member for Murrumba Chris Whiting said that the beginning of major construction was scheduled before the end of the financial year. He also said that once construction is completed, the interchange will make a big difference for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians who has access to this rapidly growing area.

Shane King, Member for Kallangur, said that the upgrade on the interchange is vital as volumes increase on Bruce Highway.

“The upgraded interchange will accommodate future 8-laning of the Bruce Highway. It’s anticipated that the project will be completed by mid-2018.” – Member Shane King
